RHS Garden Wisley — What Seven Years on Site Made Possible
Byron Meyer designed the canopy structure at RHS Garden Wisley in a previous role.
When BM Greenhouses was subsequently appointed to provide ongoing maintenance across multiple glasshouse structures on the site, that prior knowledge deepened further. Regular access to the facility across seasons — through system changes, alongside the operational team — built an understanding no tender process can replicate.
Through that maintenance relationship, RHS Wisley approached Byron about a screening problem that had existed since the original build.
The originally specified motorised roll-up system had never been implemented. The question, years later, was what to do.
A contractor arriving cold would most likely have priced the original motorised concept or offered a standard shading product.
Byron already knew the motorised route was financially unviable at current costs. He already knew a generic product would not account for the specific geometry and airflow requirements of this canopy. He assessed the functional objectives directly: controlled shade, usable airflow, structural compatibility.
An alternative using bespoke cascading doors was considered and rejected — it improved shading but restricted airflow in the wrong areas.
The solution delivered used shade netting adapted specifically to the canopy geometry, meeting the functional requirements within a budget the client considered viable.
Byron then managed delivery: specifying the netting solution, adapting it to the canopy geometry, and overseeing installation.
The result met the brief. The process was shorter than procurement would have been. The outcome was grounded in how the facility actually operates — not how it was originally specified to operate. And it was delivered by the same person who diagnosed it, so nothing was lost between advisory and execution.

Project Note — Screening Refurbishment Within Structural Constraints
BM Greenhouses was invited to survey an estate glasshouse as part of a wider refurbishment programme.
One element involved an existing screening system originally installed to a structure not designed for that type of screen. The initial intention was to retain and adapt as much of the existing system as possible. Once works progressed, it became clear the original arrangement was not suitable for reliable operation in its current form.
BM Greenhouses reviewed the structure, assessed the viability of the screening arrangement, and proposed a dedicated support-frame solution.
Following further assessment during the works, a different approach was developed using selected elements of the existing infrastructure alongside new bespoke support components — allowing the screening system to be completed in a form that matched the structural reality of the glasshouse and achieved the required screen operation.
Tender-Stage Assessment — Heating Strategy Review During Refurbishment
As part of a glasshouse refurbishment tender, BM Greenhouses reviewed an initial heating strategy proposing removal of the existing system and replacement with a new central heating and cooling approach.
Following multiple site visits, Byron questioned whether full replacement was the most sensible route. The existing heating system remained relatively recent, continued to support adjacent glasshouse areas, and still offered operational value. BM Greenhouses proposed refurbishing the existing heating within the affected area and introducing localised heating and cooling units only where tighter room-by-room control was needed.
BM Greenhouses was not appointed to deliver the works.

Prior-Role Decision Note — Runoff Compliance and Irrigation Redesign
In a previous role, Byron Meyer assessed a specialist growing facility that needed to respond to tighter runoff-management requirements.
The existing arrangement no longer provided a compliant long-term basis for capturing and handling irrigation return water. The recommended route was a redesigned irrigation arrangement in which runoff water was captured, returned to the plant room, treated and reused within the system — addressing the compliance requirement while reducing water and feed waste and improving control over irrigation performance.
Prior-Role Decision Note — Facility Viability Through Integrated Building Strategy
In a previous role, Byron Meyer assessed a specialist facility project where the budget available for a new glasshouse was constrained by the cost of associated research accommodation.
Treating the two elements as separate building problems was making the overall scheme harder to deliver within budget and introducing avoidable interface complexity. Byron’s recommendation was to use glasshouse-style construction principles more strategically across the wider facility — keeping the scheme technically coherent while reducing capital pressure on the research element.
